***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 21, 2003***

LOCAL SNAP CHAPTER TO RESUME FULL SERVICES FOR
CLERGY ABUSE SURVIVORS

The San Diego Chapter of SNAP will resume full operation effective August 1, 2003.

Monthly support meetings for survivors (and their families) of clergy abuse/misconduct will also resume and will be held on the second Tuesday of the month from 7-9 pm with the next support meeting scheduled for August 12, 2003.

The location of monthly support meetings will be posted on the local website (http://www.sandiegosnap.org) no later than July 25, 2003. Additional information on survivor services can be obtained by calling the local toll free number 800-233-3182 ext. 117.

Mark A. Brooks, seminary abuse survivor and client liaison for a local law firm which represents abuse victims, will also resume duties as local SNAP representative/group facilitator.

The agreement to resume such duties is in large part due to the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling which struck down the California law suspending the statute of limitations which allowed
for the prosecution of past abuse crimes against minors.

As a result of that ruling, a greater and more urgent need for local victim/survivor services has arisen.

Services will now include:

  • crises support/ intervention to include
  • peer suicide watch,
  • monthly support meetings,
  • peer counselling,
  • law enforcement contacts and referrals,
  • educational resources/outreach for victims and public,
  • attorney and professional counselling referrals and
  • other additional support resources for victim/survivors and their families as needed.
